How to Choose the Right Flooring for Your Home

May 23, 2014 0 comments Article Uncategorized

Maybe you are tired of your current flooring or you have just bought a new house and want to redecorate. How do you choose the best flooring for you? With so many styles and materials out there, how do you choose the right one? Some things to consider are appearance, comfort, function and your budget. Below is a list to help you decide what would be best for you.

Carpet

Carpet is one of the best options for bedrooms and areas that don’t get walked over as much. It is warm and soft underfoot and will help to keep the room warm. There is a risk of staining if the carpet is a light colour so go for a darker shade if it is in a kid’s bedroom or if you have animals. It will need some regular care with vacuuming and at least a once a year shampooing to keep it looking in shape.

Tile

Tile is the best option for bathrooms or kitchens. Spillages can easily be wiped up and it is easy to maintain. It is durable and cool underfoot. It is a great choice if you have children or pets and in areas that get walked over a lot.

Wood

Wood flooring is a stylish, versatile choice that would add a lovely rustic charm to your home. Although not the best choice for a bathroom as water is continually present, if you put a good waterproof seal on it, it can be a great option for kitchens and give it that homely feel. There are many choices of colour, thickness and finish to suit any preference. They are easier to clean than carpet and don’t retain so much dust and bacteria.

Laminate/vinyl

These are great options if dampness or staining is a worry as they can be cleaned very easily. They can be found in a variety of colours or patterns to suit any style. Vinyl peel and stick tiles can be laid down by anybody so are a way to save money rather than getting someone in to do it for you.

Brick/stone

Brick or stone is a bit more expensive as you would have to get a professional in to lay it down for you. It is a very durable option that could last for decades and cut down on the expense of having to replace the flooring every few years. Although strong, the brick or stone will wear over time and give it a weathered look.  Brick and stone is also fireproof and resistant to hot spillages so could be a great option for the kitchen.

So weigh up your budget, style choice, functionality and decide what works best for you.
