Things to Consider When Choosing a Garage Door
There are many different styles and types of garage door out there. How do you choose the right one for your home? Here are a few things to consider to get the best one for you.
Decide Your Budget
How much do you have to spend? Wood and fiberglass cost the most and if you decide to have insulation added then this adds up. If you live in an area with very cold weather then insulation is a good idea and makes it worthwhile when you get your energy bill. If you have a lower budget then you can go for an uninsulated single sheet steel door or lower grade wood door. Do consider that if you spend a few more dollars at first then this could cut back on maintenance fees in the future and really put a better value on your house.
What Type of Material?
Doors can be made from wood, fiberglass and contemporary materials like glass, copper or a combination of zinc and wood. Think about what style your house is or what style you want it to be. If you are going for a modern look then you might want to choose the more contemporary materials or if going for a more homely, vintage feel then wood could be right for you.
Do you Want it to Have a Window?
If you want a window then this is an extra expense and you have to think about what you will be keeping in your garage. If you are storing expensive equipment in there then maybe a window is not the right option as you don’t want people to be able to see in from the outside. You can select from curved, square, arched or rectangular windows.
Do You Want it to Tilt or Roll Up?
Roll up doors are more expensive but are stronger and save in space. Tilting doors are cheaper in price but can allow more moisture and debris into the garage. The roll up doors tend to be a little safer as less chance of them being pried open like the tilted doors. Also space needs to be considered. The roll up doors can be opened with the car directly in front unlike the tilted versions.
How Much Time do You Have for Maintenance?
Fiberglass tends to be very sturdy and low maintenance but is not recommended for colder climates. Metal doors can dent easily and show scratches. The wood doors are strong but do need some regular care to keep the wood looking nice. Always ask about maintenance costs and warranties before buying anything.
The garage can be used for all sorts of things from parking cars to working on your latest hobby. Regardless of its use you need to put some thought into what would work best for you and your needs. Consider getting some professional advice to help you make the best decision.
